[OPLINLIST] Library Discard Option

Greetings Library Professionals!

Have you ever looked at your piles of weeded materials and think... "someone could really use these."  I have the perfect place for you to send some of your discards, putting them to good use. The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction<http://www.drc.ohio.gov/web/prisprog.htm> maintains a library for inmates as well as a children's reading room in each prison.

The prison libraries are in need of materials - specifically:

Fiction and Nonfiction Paperback books (No true crime, please)
Encyclopedia Sets (Some institutions have sets that are more than 20 years old!)
Playaway Audio Books
Children's Books

The children's rooms are there as a comfortable place for children visiting their incarcerated parent. The reading rooms encourage family literacy, and contain a wide variety of children's books. In addition, an inmate narrator reads to the visiting children twice a day. A variety of arts and craft supplies for the children are also available in most of the rooms. Many of the supplies and books are donated by employees and service organizations.

If you already send materials to your local correctional facility (jail, prison, youth facility), please continue to do so. This is just another means for libraries to share withdrawn material with the prisons.
If you would like to share your discards with the prisons, please send no more than 2 boxes of adult and 2 boxes of children's materials a month. (Boxes must be sturdy, please.) You may send your donations via Priority Dispatch to the State Library of Ohio. Please add the following to the labeled item or box:
