[OPLINLIST] Through adversity

In Ferguson, Missouri, the public library is a point of light. When schools were closed for safety yesterday, the library stayed open. They invited teachers and volunteers in to teach kids and invited everyone in to their safe space.

We are open 9–4. Wifi, water, rest, knowledge. We are here for you. If neighbors have kids, let them know teachers are here today, too.

So many people asked how they could donate to the library, they placed a Paypal donation button on their home page and had by yesterday received donations in the five-digits . People have also bought books to donate to the library and sent in checks.

Why have over 1,200 people have donated to the library? A number of people on Twitter said they had donated because they wanted to help people in Ferguson, and donating to the library seemed a constructive way to do that. That’s why I donated. The evidence of how they’re helping is easy to find.

When people tweet in praise of the library, the library often responds with the hashtag # whatlibrariesdo . Like many libraries, they’re doing a lot with a little. Here’s a brief interview with Scott Bonner , the director and sole full-time librarian at the library, talking about what was happening there in September. And here’s an article from Library Journal written in August.

We know libraries serve their communities. It’s encouraging to see a library building community where there’s so much adversity. I hope you have a safe and peaceful Thanksgiving.
