[OPLINLIST] Former Deputy State Librarian Roger Verny passes unexpectedly

[cid:image002.jpg at 01D0D031.995CE000]It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to former Deputy State Librarian Roger Verny. Roger passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 4th. He retired from the State Library in January 2000 after 15 years of dedicated service to the State Library of Ohio and the Ohio library community. He is remembered fondly for his kind nature, open door approach to everyone, and radiate smile when he talked about his love of ice hockey. Roger touched so many lives in the library profession and his legacy will live on through their work.  After retiring from the State Library, Roger and his wife Carol moved to Newburyport, MA when she became the Director of the Haverhill Public Library. Carol is also a beloved member of our community having worked almost 30 years in central Ohio libraries and library organizations.

As Deputy State Librarian Roger oversaw many projects at the State Library of Ohio during his tenure, such as managing LSTA funds for new and innovative programming throughout Ohio's library community including the creation of a 24/7 virtual reference service and the automation of 1,556 school libraries. He also served on the Ohio Historical Records Advisory Board as well as a number of committees dealing with statewide initiatives. Prior to joining the State Library, Roger served in a variety of senior administrative positions at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 11, from 9 to 12 at the Twomey LeBlanc Conte Funeral Home<http://www.tlcfuneralhome.com/> in Newburyport, MA. There will be a service at noon, followed by lunch at a local restaurant. An obituary is not on the funeral home's website as of 10:15 am today.
