[OPLINLIST] Dedication for Floyd Dickman Children’s Book Collection at State Library of Ohio

The State Library of Ohio held a dedication ceremony on December 13, 2016 for the Floyd Dickman Children’s Book Collection, a new collection of over 1,500 children’s and teen books recently assembled and now available for check-out. The collection is named in memory of children’s literature expert, advocate, and librarian Floyd Dickman.

The collection began as the Columbus Children’s Collection, a teaching resource of approximately 800 notable children’s books at the Columbus Program of the Kent State University School of Library and Information Science<https://www.kent.edu/slis> (SLIS). These books were used by Assistant Professor Belinda Boon in her children’s materials and children’s librarianship courses. In 2015, Dr. Boon relocated to the main campus in Kent, home to the Reinberger Children’s Library Center<https://www.kent.edu/slis/reinberger-childrens-library-center> and its Marantz Picturebook Collection for the Study of Picturebook Art, and the Columbus Children’s Collection was donated to the State Library.

The State Library purchased additional books for the Floyd Dickman Collection, including Ohioana Book Award<http://www.ohioana.org/programs/ohioana-book-awards/> winners, Buckeye Children’s & Teen Book Award<http://www.bcbookaward.info/> winners, Choose to Read Ohio<https://library.ohio.gov/services-for-libraries/library-programs-development/ctro/> titles, and recent ALA Youth Media Award winners and honor books. Future plans include the creation of guides to highlight the Ohioana and Buckeye award-winning books and Choose to Read Ohio selections. Ongoing development of the collection will add new children’s and teen books of statewide or national note.

“I am delighted the State Library has the opportunity to honor and recognize Floyd Dickman’s many contributions to librarianship and children’s literature with this collection,” expressed State Librarian Beverly Cain.  “It is my hope that this carefully assembled collection of classic and award-winning children’s books will serve as a lasting legacy for Floyd’s life work.”

Floyd Dickman was a Library Consultant at the State Library and retired in 1999 after 23 years of service. Floyd’s legacy is an enduring imprint upon library and literacy services in Ohio and across the country. The State Library of Ohio Board’s retirement resolution at that time recognized Floyd’s leadership, commitment, and passion for library services, children’s literature and family literacy. He also received praise for his dedication and compelling enthusiasm to teaching and mentoring librarians and library science students. During his career he was awarded the Ohio Library Council Librarian of the Year, OELMA’s Presidential Award, and Outstanding Friend from the Ohio Family Literacy Task Force. Floyd passed away in June 2015.
