Join teacher/librarian, Lori Lee, as she shares an engaging project that
develops students into authors. Over the past three years, Lori Lee's
sophomore honors English classes at Zanesville High School have completed a
project-based unit in which students record family stories in a thoughtful
collection of narrative nonfiction writing in which they tell specific
family stories. Along the way, students conduct interviews to produce a
journalistic piece of writing and then use creative writing techniques and
literary devices to develop characters and settings. The project culminates
with the publication of a professionally produced hardbound book. The
project was the subject of an article in the October 2015 VOYA journal.

Then listen to author Olivia Hersman, Heath High School student and
playwright, poet, and published author, discuss her work. Olivia published
her first novel, Empty Canvas, in December 2015. Learn about her work on
the novel and her play on the Holocaust.

Olivia Hersman, Author & Student at Heath High School

Lori Y. Lee has over 20 years of experience as a high school English
teacher. Besides teaching English, she now serves as the library media
specialist at Zanesville High School in Zanesville, Ohio. One of her
passions in education is technology integration, which led her to pursue
becoming a Google Education Trainer and an INFOhio District ICoach. In
addition to providing professional development for schools,she has
presented at several conferences including the Ohio Educational Technology
Conference, Ohio Google Summit, and the Ohio Educational Library Media
Association annual conference.. She lives in Zanesville with her husband
and two children.

Olivia Hersman is a sixteen-year-old author, poet, and playwright from
Ohio. She has explored a vast range of writing projects, especially since
entering high school in 2013. In 2014, Olivia wrote and co-directed a
two-act play about the Holocaust to raise money for the U.S Holocaust
Memorial Museum. In 2015, she was awarded the Red Cross Youth Hero Award
for her work to end genocide through her writing. In the summer of 2015,
Olivia was chosen to attend the Reynolds Young Writers Workshop at Denison
University, where she finalized her first novel, Empty Canvas. Empty Canvas
was published in December 2015. Olivia looks forward to continuing to write
for the rest of her life and is ready to pursue new and challenging
creative writing ventures that will impact her readers.
