Saturday, September 24 @ 3:00 p.m.
In *The Bellwether*, Kyle Kondik, managing editor for the nonpartisan
political forecasting newsletter Sabato’s Crystal Ball, blends data-driven
research and historical documentation to explain Ohio’s remarkable record
as a predictor of presidential results and why the state is essential to
the 2016 election and beyond. Part history, part journalism, this
entertaining and astute guide proposes that Ohio has been the key state in
the Electoral College for more than a century and examines what the idea of
the swing state has come to mean. Offered in partnership with the Book
Loft, copies of Kondik’s book will be available for sale and signing.

*[image: Author & Book Cover]Lee Martin* | *Late One Night*
Tuesday, September 27 @ 7:00 p.m.
Lee Martin is the Pulitzer Prize Finalist author of *The Bright Forever *and
teaches in the MFA program at The Ohio State University. His latest book, *Late
One Night*, examines the devastating effect of rumors and the resilience of
one family in the face of the ultimate tragedy. On a night no one will ever
forget, Della Black and three of her seven children are killed in a
horrific fire in their trailer. As the surviving children are caught in the
middle of a custody battle between their well-intentioned neighbor and
their father and his pregnant mistress, new truths about what really
happened the night of the fire come to light. Ronnie and his girlfriend,
Brandi Tate, maintain his innocence – he’s a loving, caring father who
wants to do everything he can to protect his family. But as the gossip
continues, Ronnie feels his children (and, eventually, Brandi) pulling away
from him. Soon enough, he finds himself at a crossroads – should he allow
gossip-mongers to seal his fate, or should he fight to prove that he’s not
the monster people paint him to be? Offered in partnership with Thurber
House, copies of Martin's book will be available for sale and signing.

*[image: Author & Book Cover]Shawn Schwaner* | *Dear Mama*
Thursday, September 29 @ 7:00 p.m.
Dr. Shawn Schwaner joins us to talk about his memoir, *Dear Mama: Lessons
on Race, Grace, and the Wisdom to Overcome*. He will share stories that
highlight the hope he found while overcoming a childhood of adversity. His
talk will be followed by a Q&A with Bexley resident and BMPA officer Bryan
Drewry. Schwaner received his doctorate in Sociology from The Ohio State
University, and is currently an assistant professor at Miami Dade College.
For nearly a decade, he worked directly with street gangs and provided
training for police departments, correctional institutions, and community
based organizations and has extensive professional speaking experience in
these areas. His current emphasis is working with sexual assault and
violent crime survivors. This event is in partnership with the Bexley
Minority Parent Alliance.

*[image: Author & Book Cover]Edward Foley* | *Ballot Battles*
Thursday, October 27 @ 7:00 p.m.
In *Ballot Battles*, Edward Foley presents a sweeping history of election
controversies in the United States, tracing how their evolution generated
legal precedents that ultimately transformed how we determine who wins and
who loses. Ballot Battles is not only the first full chronicle of contested
elections in the US. It also provides a powerful explanation of why the
American election system has been-and remains-so ineffective at deciding
the tightest races in a way that all sides will agree is fair. Foley is the
Charles W. Ebersold and Florence Whitcomb Ebersold Chair in Law and
Director of Election Law at OSU's College of Law. Offered in partnership
with the Book Loft, copies of Foley's book will be available for sale and
signing.

*[image: Author & Book Cover]Michael Flamm* | *In the Heat of the Summer*
Thursday, November 17 @ 7:00 p.m.
On the morning of July 16, 1964, a white police officer in New York City
shot and killed a black teenager, James Powell, across the street from the
high school where he was attending summer classes. Two nights later, a
peaceful demonstration in Central Harlem degenerated into violent protests.
Michael Flamm’s *In the Heat of the Summer: The New York Riots of 1964 and
the War on Crime* spotlights the extraordinary drama of a single week when
peaceful protests and violent unrest intersected, the freedom struggle
reached a crossroads, and the politics of law and order led to demands for
a War on Crime. Author of several books, Flamm is also a Bexley resident
and Professor of History at Ohio Wesleyan University. Offered in
partnership with the Book Loft, copies of Flamm’s book will be available
for sale and signing.
