Youth Services Librarian Position



Location: Sycamore Plaza Library

Reports to: Branch Manager

Non-exempt full-time position: 37.5-40 hours a week

Compensation: Starting at $16.20/hour with excellent benefits



Oversees the development, implementation and evaluation of all children's programs and collections. Responsible for providing specialized training and library services to patrons including children's programs, homework help services, outreach, reader's advisory, in-depth reference, technology support and circulation. Provides training and guidance to other Public Services staff including the use of electronic resources and reference tools. Committed to the Pickerington Public Library's Mission to "Inspire Knowledge, Connect Community, Enrich Our World, Read!" The Librarian serves as a shift supervisor in the absence of the Branch Manager.



Job Summary:

*         Plan, coordinate, promote and present youth programs, displays and outreach

*         Maintain collections, weeding, and replacing material as needed

*         Answers questions and assists library users in locating desired information, resources or library materials

*         Supervises and trains branch staff and volunteers and acts as the Person-In-Charge (PIC) regularly

*         Ensures that branch staff are responsive to customers in a consistent, friendly and professional manner

*         Is the Homework Help Center Coordinator for the branch which includes: K-12 homework assistance, technology, volunteers, supplies, and programming

*         Actively works to build relationships with schools and teachers within service area

*         Coordinate with the Community Relations Coordinator and Library Director to establish and maintain collaborations with community agencies and promote Library services through community outreach

*         Ensures that the user environment is pleasant, friendly and that services meet the needs of patrons

*         Establishes and implements goals and objectives for branch service which support the library's strategic plan

*         Assists in the supervision of the daily money collection, including it's safekeeping and delivery to bank

*         Assist patrons in placing requests for library materials, both local and from other CLC libraries

*         Provides excellent service to patrons of all ages and backgrounds, practices positive public relations and performs duties in a friendly and courteous manner

*         Monitors facility and property issues and conditions, communicating any needs or problems to the appropriate person

*         Cooperates with other staff, promotes teamwork, shares information and resolves conflict

*         Assists in the delivery of services to the customer at all service points. Maintains personal skills to assure quality of service in areas of Library collections, technology, reference, readers' advisory and circulation

*         Performs additional duties as assigned including being a project lead and/or serving on task forces, committees, etc.

  Qualifications:

*         MLS (MLIS) or MLIS from an American Library Association accredited university

*         A minimum of two years professional public library experience

*         Knowledgeable of the skills needed for early literacy

*         Superior communication, listening and interpersonal skills

*         Skill in ILS automation environment, or ability to develop that skill

*         Maintains professional, businesslike behavior and appearance

*         Demonstrated commitment to serving library patrons and residents of the community

*         Must maintain insurability under the Library's vehicle liability insurance coverage. Periodically drives to all Library locations; may travel for training and development assignments. Must have immediate access to personal vehicle. Must maintain valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. May drive PPL vehicle if called upon.

Physical Demands:

    Physical requirements include ability to stand, sit, bend, push and carry library materials over an extended period of time. The employee must be able to lift up to 30 pounds and push a 50 pound cart.
