Rising Star Winner
[http://neo-rls.org/photos/54862_09232019092405.jpg]Congratulations to Kalyn Kappelman the 2019 NEO-RLS Rising Star winner. Kalyn began her library career at Reed Memorial Library through the State Library of Ohio’s Guiding Ohio Online AmeriCorps program. Her passion for teaching and technology led to greatly increased digital literacy in the Ravenna community as she taught 80 classes to over 350 patrons in just two years. When she became a Reference Assistant, and then eventually took on the newly created role of Training and Special Projects Coordinator, Kalyn expanded her work to include a focus on STEM learning for kids and teens. Recognizing a need in the community, she wrote and received two LSTA grants for new technology to use both with patrons in the library and in partnership with the local school district. She deeply believes in the importance of community engagement and is currently part of an ILEAD group that is creating a website to promote librarians’ knowledge of asset-based community development. Kalyn has recently started a new job as the Branch Services Librarian – Generalist at the Warrensville Heights branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library.
OVGTSL 2020 Conference: Technical Services Today
MAY 17-19, 2020 -- UNIVERSITY OF AKRON, AKRON, OHIO<https://ideaexchange.uakron.edu/ovgtsl2020/>
Technical Services librarians are faced with multiple changes in workflows, budgets, and technology. We are seeing an increase in usage of electronic resources, evidence-driven collection development, challenging budgets, space, and staffing, as well as rapidly changing technologies.

The OVGTSL 2020 Conference Program Committee invites forward thinking submissions in all areas related to technical services librarianship including acquisitions, cataloging, serials, electronic resources, collection development and management, systems, and preservation in academic, public, and special libraries.

Participants are invited to submit proposals that report on recent research, address emerging trends, or showcase new tools, services and projects. To submit a program proposal, click HERE<https://forms.gle/Efg9fkp5EDSaY8q99>.
GCPL Becomes Funding Information Network Partner

A Note from the Executive Director
[https://myneotoday.org/photos/35223_01302017091627.jpg]As I travel around our region I am always amazed at what different libraries are doing in support of their communities and I tend to tell everyone I know about all the great things that are happening. So, it’s no surprise that a friend gave me an article from the New York Times about libraries as tourist attractions (Sunday, August 18, 2019). Once I read it I knew I needed to share some of it with you. The article opens by talking about the challenges that libraries began facing about 10 years ago due to competition from other sources and goes on to talk about some of the innovations that are occurring right now across the world. Helsinki, Finland’s new Central Library Oodi, was designed to provide two thirds of its space to community meeting and doing. A “book heaven” is found on the top floor, an urban workshop on the second floor and room for pop-up markets and pop-up information desks for outside organizations. After opening in December 2018, they had their one millionth visitor in March 2019! In Calgary, Alberta, Canada, the new Central Library has a train running through it as the site was purposefully designed to have an active light-rail transit line. How is that for solving the “I can’t get to the library due to poor public transportation” problem? The concept of the New Central Library is that you move from “fun” to “serious” as you go upstairs. There are cafes, a theater and spaces for reading, and in 2020 the lobby will feature a 65-inch multi-touch table for playing games and making art. In Doha, Qatar, the new National Library houses over one million books including 137,000 for children and 35,000 for teens. It also fills the function of a community gathering space, something not previously found in Doha outside of cafes and shops. With its spaces for writing music, green screens and play areas, it has become a family destination. As libraries worldwide continue to grapple with the question of how to best meet the needs of their community, we would love to know what you are doing in your library. If you have something that you would like to share, let us know. We would love to feature it in our newsletter!
