The Buckeye Children's Book Award Council is pleased to announce the nominees for the 2020 Buckeye Children's Book Award and the 2020 Buckeye Teen Book Award.


The following titles were chosen in an online nomination process by young readers across the state of Ohio.


For Grades K-2

  *   Back Roads, Country Toads by Devin Scillian; illustrated by Tim Bowers (Sleeping Bear Press, 2019)
  *   Carl and the Meaning of Life by Deborah Freedman (Viking Books for Young Readers, 2019)
  *   Harold & Hog Pretend for Real! (Elephant & Piggie Like Reading! Book 6) by Dan Santat (Hyperion Books for Children, 2019)
  *   The Little Guys by Vera Brosgol (Roaring Brook Press, 2019)
  *   We Don't Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins (Disney-Hyperion, 2018)


For Grades 3-5

  *   Elbow Grease vs. Motozilla by John Cena; illustrated by Howard McWilliam (Random House Books for Young Readers, 2019)
  *   I Survived the Attack of the Grizzlies, 1967 (I Survived book 17) by Lauren Tarshis (Scholastic, 2018)
  *   New Kid by Jerry Craft (Quill Tree Books, 2019)
  *   Shelby's Story: A Dog's Way Home Tale by W. Bruce Cameron (Starscape, 2108)
  *   Torpedoed: The True Story of the World War II Sinking of "The Children's Ship" by Deborah Heiligman (Henry Holt and Co. BYR, 2019)


For Grades 6-8

  *   Supernova (Amulet book 8) by Kazu Kibuishi (Graphix, 2018)
  *   Front Desk by Kelly Yang (Arthur A. Levine Books, 2018)
  *   Grenade by Alan Gratz (Scholastic Press, 2018)
  *   Guts by Raina Telgemeier (Graphix, 2019)
  *   Inkling by Kenneth Oppel (Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2018)


The Teen Buckeye Book Award nominees (for grades 9-12):

  *   On the Come Up by Angie Thomas (Balzer + Bray, 2019)
  *   Superman: Dawnbreaker by Matt de la Peña (Random House Books for Young Readers, 2019)
  *   Supernova (Renegades book 3) by Marissa Meyer (Feiwel & Friends, 2019)
  *   The Toll (Arc of a Scythe book 3) by Neal Shusterman (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2019)
  *   War Storm (Red Queen Book 4) by Victoria Aveyard (HarperTeen, 2018)


To be eligible for nomination for the 2020 award, a book must have been published in the United States in the previous two years.  Voting is open to any student in Ohio, and will begin on September 1, 2020 on the Buckeye Children's and Teen Book Award (BCTBA) website: www.bcbookaward.info<http://www.bcbookaward.info>.  Voting ends on November 10, 2020, and the winners will be announced after December 1, 2020.  Nominations for the 2021 awards are being accepted at the same website, all summer long. Ohio's reader's choice book award is notable among other state book award programs in that the nominated and winning titles are entirely selected by the state's children and teens.


The Buckeye Children's and Teen Book Award Council is pleased to continue our partnership with TeachingBooks.net TeachingBooks.net, the professional tool for educators, will be providing free access for teachers and librarians to multimedia resources on the Buckeye-nominated books, from author interviews to literacy connections and lesson plans. Together our organizations will continue to promote the love of reading among Ohio's children and teens.
