Try downloading OpenOffice from the official website:  www.openoffice.org

This link will take you right to the latest released stable version:  
http://download.openoffice.org/2.0.2/index.html

Simply download the installation program to your hard drive and install 
as you would any other program.

Ps. For what it's worth, I've been using OOo Writer and Calc exclusively 
for over a year now to create rather complex word processing and 
spreadsheet documents.
