I wanted to pass this exciting information along to you all about two new web applications which I predict will be huge benefit for any library that is running Mozilla Firefox 1.5 or higher.

Michael Robertson of MP3.com and LindowsOS, er Linspire OS, fame is spearheading a project to provide FREE web applications via the web technology you may of heard of called AJAX. You can read about it and sign up to be notified about new applications at http://www.ajaxlaunch.com

A few weeks ago they launched a product called Ajaxwrite. For all intents and purporse it is a FREE browser based word processor that is compatible with not only Microsoft Word documents but wordperfect and Openoffice documents as well.
Libraries now have the power to run a word processor on every workstation they have connected to the internet as long as it has Mozilla Firefox on it! There should be no excuse for any institution now not to offer it's customers word processing!

See http://www.ajaxwrite.com

Robertson is taking the ajaxlaunch initiative even further by promising to launch additional applications in this method. They are about to launch AjaxSketch a web browser based drawing application!

See http://www.ajaxsketch.com and give it a try!

I encourage the technical minded to sign up at ajaxlaunch.com and keep an eye on what these people are doing, it is industy changing forward thinking that demands attention!

The AJAX technology itself is ramping up and many sites are popping up that give you some exciting functionality. Here is a good blog about some of the new AJAX desktop sites out there that let you create your own workspace:

Check out the pageflakes.com, netvibes.com or protopage.com links in the above blog for some very interesting and useful things you can do with AJAX!
