[OPLINTECH] Office 2007 on public workstations?

We have 2007 for staff computers and run 2000 on public computers though I
probably will upgrade them to 2002 sometime next year. So far we have had
no problems with 2007. In fact, our staff loves it far better than the
previous generations.

The only thing I would suggest is that you might want to change the default
save settings to 2003 compatibility for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access -
this will alleviate your staff's documents from being incompatible with the
rest of the world for the time being. You can do this at the install level
by making an customized installation through the Office Customization Tool -
here's info on how to do it
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc179097.aspx .

For those who baulk at Microsoft because of the cost www.Techsoup.org has
cheapo pricing on Microsoft products, currently Office 2007 Professional
Plus with software assurance is running at $20 a client. In fact, I just
picked up Adobe CS 3.5 Professional for $136 - that's like $400 off of the
Government Upgrade price I would of had to pay through CDWG.

www.TechSoup.org is software heaven for public libraries.

Subject: [OPLINTECH] Office 2007 on public workstations?

Hello,
I'm wondering how many library systems are offering Microsoft Office 2007 on

their public workstations? If you aren't, what alternatives do you offer?
An older version of Office? A version of OpenOffice?

We are considering installing it onto the public workstations, but I'm
reluctant to do so as it has been problematic for us on the staff
workstations (resoure hog which requires us to increase installed base of
RAM, interactions with our catalog software and other Java based apps,
corruption of data tables, etc.).
