Open Source Software and Your Library

Tell <http://ce.serls.org/emailevent.cfm?ID=443> a colleague

Program Date: 09/18/2008

Program Time: 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Speaker:
Chauncey G. Montgomery, MLIS
Director/Fiscal Officer
Community Library, Sunbury, OH

Program Description:
Open source is a hot topic these days, especially as libraries facing budget
cuts look for alternatives to the (often expensive) "mainstream" software
products on the market. However, navigating the world of open source can be
a challenge, even for the most tech savvy. There are many important issues
to consider, such as; deciding which open source product is right for your
library, planning and implementing, helping staff and patrons adjust to the
change, and staying current on updates or new versions of the program.

If these are questions you have, attend this workshop and get some answers!
Chauncey Montgomery, Director and Fiscal Officer, Community Library, will
address these topics in the morning and provide an overview of some of the
most popular open source programs available today.

After lunch, participants will have a chance to "get their hands dirty" with
a live demonstration of Open Office. Explore the features of this popular
alternative to Microsoft Office and hear about the logistics of installing,
using and troubleshooting. Then, if at the end of the day you find yourself
wishing there was more time to learn another open source program... you'll
get your chance! At the conclusion of this class, attendees will participate
in a live vote that will decide the topic of the next open source workshop
to be offered by SERLS."
