Just be certain to read the readme page in the hardware faq for your version of the router prior to doing anything at

It will work fine for a public hotspot.  Why do you want to require logins? 
You can just use wep encryption id's and then only give that out to people you want on it.

Do you think it is well suited to use in a public hotspot (eg Public Library) where you require logins?

I think ultimately, I will use my own home net as a guinea pig as well.
