*playing the devil's advocate*

Unfortunately the open source stuff, while it will find your iPod, won't
help you use an audiobook from the Ohio Ebook Project (nee OverDrive).  So
far, those materials require the factory-original iTunes.

(... what other reason would there be to have an Apple product installed
on your PC, if not to cram WMA audiobooks into an iPod???? lol)
