[OPLINTECH] Network decisions

Hello all,

The ACPL system is preparing to make some updates that will impact the library's  network development options long term, and I'd love to hear about your network setup.

Our main branch currently receives a fiber connection from OPLIN, and we’re planning to transition from T1s to 10 Mbps  fiber at two of our branch libraries. Moving to fiber presents us with an opportunity to choose to keep OPLIN as the A site for each branch, or to have our main branch be the A site for the fiber connection. We’re weighing the potential benefits and downsides of each option, and I’d love to hear from libraries about what configuration you selected, your reasoning, and what networking joys or trials you’ve experienced as a result.

I’d also like to hear what server environment you use, and how extensively you use it – staff intranet? Virtual LAN? Server virtualization? Free vs. licensed software? Group Policy, much?

I recently joined ACPL, and am working on some strategic IT planning. Currently, ACPL is running:
Windows Server 2008 R2 at 4 locations, acting as domain controllers
Deep Freeze Enterprise
Separate public Wifi network, through IPCop boxes
No virtualization

Thanks in advance!
