[OPLINTECH] [OPLINLIST] Potential future fallout from the OPLIN e-mail server failure

Any excellent point, Chad, thank you!

OPLIN is currently operating a transfer server, so if we have your old OPLIN email address and your new email address, mail sent to the old oplin.org address will get forwarded to you. See http://oplin.org/node/628.

BUT, the OPLIN Board wants everyone to understand that "indefinite" does not equal "permanent." At some point -- probably in a couple of years, the OPLIN Board has not set a date yet -- we will take this transfer server down and either re-purpose it or retire the hardware. And should the hardware fail before then, we will not recreate the server.

So while the transfer server ~might~ still be working when your domain registration comes up for renewal, I personally wouldn't take that chance.

Good advice, Chad.

I don't remember if I mentioned this in the past, but if any libraries happened to use an @oplin.org e-mail address when registering their domain names (for the library's website or e-mail, for instance...www.myawesomelibrary.org or me at myawesomelibrary.org), you might consider changing it to your current e-mail address. Domain name login information is something that can easily get lost in the shuffle since it may not be needed for years at a time, depending on how you paid for it. If you've lost your login password and try to use an online password recovery tool, you may be disappointed when you suddenly realize in a year or two that you never updated the e-mail addresses at your domain name registrar and you have to scramble before your Internet presence goes...Poof!

Almost all of you probably have a domain name and will need to re-register it again in some future year. Whoever did it last time may or may not still be around...

Just a thought.
