[OPLINTECH] Counting Wireless Patrons

Hi Jordan,

I believe the best answer is dependent on your wireless network equipment and configuration choices. Like you, I currently count: feed wifi logs to a text editor, and auto-count (instead of DCHP leases) unique instance of a MAC address in a given time period. I choose that criteria because I’m seeing many devices (especially staff cell phones) receive multiple DCHP leases in a single day to the same unique device. In the absence of a more managed WLAN architecture, I’m pleased with those numbers. I have my eye on E-rate funding to upgrade to a Juniper WLAN controller - hopefully!

Thanks,

Subject: [OPLINTECH] Counting Wireless Patrons

Hi, guys. I was wondering what methodology you use at your libraries to count the number of patrons that connect to your wireless networks for the state audit.

At present, the only idea I have is to count DHCP leases, but I feel like there has to be a more elegant (though hopefully still affordable) method out there.

Thanks,
