[OPLINTECH] New Computers with Optical Drives

We are a client of Level9. Our service population is roughly 20,000. Starting around 2011, we did away with optical drives on the public PCs and provide an external DVD drive. We rarely get asked for the external drive. Most patrons are bringing in USB drives or using cloud storage (e.g. Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.). We've had no complaints about not having the internal optical drive. In regard to staff PCs, while a few of us have internal optical drives, most do not, and it has never been an issue. The external DVD drive works fine.

An external DVD-ROM drive might cost you in the vicinity of $50, but the cost of an internal DVD-ROM might cost in the vicinity of $25. So after dis-including the internal drives on two or three computers per external USB drive you buy, you'll start saving money.

I have already seen most libraries making the switch over to SSD drives instead of using HDD drive. I guess it would make more sense to get a computer with a smaller footprint with a security attachment and then opt in for a couple of external optical drives if someone wants to use one.____
