[DPLAsteering] Preliminary Conference Call Agendas

Hi all,

I’ve been working with Liz and Tom on a diagram to help facilitate the discussion for this part of the agenda:

Community Engagement Center Discussion
--Roles and Responsibilities
--Option for who might be the CECs—academic libraries, historical societies, public libraries, and others
--Decision making process for who will be the CECs

Liz is traveling so she asked Tom and I to share it with steering.

I just want to be clear before I share it – this was brainstorming and is not meant to pre-empt the work of any of the working groups.  In drafting, we specifically tried to think in a technology agnostic manner, and it is also clear from reading several different draft reports that the output from lots of the different groups will end up fleshing out these ideas (I’m thinking particularly of Governance and Technology, but I think all the groups might impact this)

The objective was just to try to clarify roles and responsibilities for a CEC vs other areas of organization within the DPLA Ohio project, to aid our discussion.

Missy put it great in her response to the initial draft by saying, "I think the middle section (brown) needs a little finessing, but only because we are still in process of determining the look and feel of positions which will be a part of the three year prototype.  I can say for sure that the Project Manager will not hire and manage the DPLA staff – they will coordinate and work with, but they won’t be at the department manager level."

And there is also some concern about clarifying the reference to a SysAdmin (which we intended as the SysAdmin for whatever server is hosting the software – not a dpla ohio specific position) - I will make this change but I haven’t done it yet.

Also, Stephen asked for clarification of the role of the CEC in organizing metadata workshops.  Does the CEC need to have a metadata expert?  The way I see it is that the CEC is responsible for organizing the workshop, and bringing together all of the necessary people – getting a space, polling their community to find a date, lining up one or more metadata experts to facilitate.  The metadata expert in the room might be the Metadata Specialist, or it might be a member of the DPLA Metadata working group from the particular community served by the CEC.

But others may see it differently and maybe this is something to be addressed by Governance.

Good morning!

Liz and I have been working to develop the draft agendas, included below, for our Steering Committee calls on the next three Fridays.  Please let us know if you have questions about the agendas, and let the group know if you have issues which should be added to the agendas for any of the calls.  We are so pleased with the level of work which has been going on in the Working Groups.  With the Working Group reports, we have assigned the dates for them after discussions with the working groups to determine where they are in the process.
