This is a "good news/bad news" message, Angela; thanks for posting it.
Money for NHPRC has been restored but has not been increased. Beyond this
lies the challenge of getting PAHR going. This will no doubt take time but
will get done more quickly if people in Washington hear from Ohio regularly.

I Have two suggestions. First, that Council, if it has not done so already,
pass a resolution in support of PAHR to be sent to each Ohioan in
Congress--senators and representatives. Once that is done and we SOA
members are notified, I'm willing to be in contact with my representatives.

Second, I hope people in leadership--NHPRC, SAA, AASLH, etc.--will be
creative with the naming of this enterprise. "PAHR" is probably meant to be
temporary but it is not really very jazzy at all. While there are already
programs for museums and historic buildings (covered in the link to the SAA
page), and our interest is for the historical record, we cannot go for a
"national endowment for history" for ourselves. But there is power in
having a "national endowment" for both the arts and humanities. Even a
National Partnership for the American Historical Record or even the
American Partnership for the Historical Record has more punch. All in all,
however, I am in full support of much more federal-level funding for
preserving and utilizing our society's sources of basic information. What
say others?
George
