49th Annual RBMS Preconference
Rare and Special Bytes: Special Collections in the Digital Age
June 24-27, 2008 | Los Angeles, California
Hosted by UCLA and the Getty Research Institute
The Preconference will explore the role of special collections in an
increasingly digital world, focusing on questions that both excite and vex
special collections librarians and archivists. Five plenary sessions will
address aspects of special collections in the digital environment,
including intellectual property issues, the use of digitized holdings in
the classroom, and mass digitization of rare book collections.
In addition to the plenary sessions, there will be eight seminars on topics
such as cataloging rare books, digitizing photographs, collecting materials
documenting under-represented groups, and blogs. Two full-day workshops
full-day workshops will be offered on Cataloging Cultural Objects (CCO) and
the Descriptive Cataloging of Rare Materials (Books).
The Preconference will be based at the Luxe Hotel Sunset Boulevard in Los
Angeles (discounted RBMS room rates available on Monday 2/25). A highlight
of the Preconference will be a full day at the Getty Center. Plan to arrive
on Tuesday for the booksellers' showcase hosted by the Southern California
chapter of the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of America (ABAA).
We look forward to seeing you in Los Angeles!
