Do you have stunning museum pieces or family heirlooms that you'd like to
share with the world? Do you want to know how to properly display them
without damage? The Oberlin Heritage Center will host a one-day, hands-on
workshop, "Strategies for Successful Display of Museum Objects," on Monday,
February 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Oberlin Depot (240 South Main
Street in Oberlin, OH). Taught by professional textile conservator,
Camille Myers Breeze, the workshop is designed for beginners through
intermediate level museum volunteers and professionals and anyone who
wishes to learn more about proper care and display of artifacts.
Enrollment is limited, and pre-registration is required. The fee for the
workshop, which includes a box lunch, is $50 for the general public and $40
for Oberlin Heritage Center members. There are a limited number of
scholarships available for full-time students and current Oberlin Heritage
Center volunteers.
Workshop attendees will learn the basics of how to safely display
three-dimensional objects including costumes, textiles, framed works, and
books. The workshop will include a review of how to provide good
environmental conditions for artifacts. Preparation of exhibit spaces will
be discussed, as well as how to create basic condition reports. Hands-on
opportunities are included when participants will be able to put into
practice what they have learned.
Camille Myers Breeze is a nationally known art conservator and Director of
Museum Textile Services in Andover, Massachusetts. She got her start in
conservation twenty years ago while a student at Oberlin College. After
earning a B.A. in Art History from Oberlin College, she received a M.A. in
Museum Studies from the Fashion Institute of Technology in 1993,
specializing in costume and textile conservation. For five years she was
an assistant conservator at the Textile Conservation Laboratory, Cathedral
of St. John the Divine, in New York City. She also was an advanced Mellon
fellow at the Textile Conservation Center, American Textile History Museum,
in Lowell, Massachusetts. In 1999, she founded Museum Textile Services.
Camille is a Professional Associate of the American Institute of Historic
and Artistic Works. She counts the Oberlin Heritage Center among her
nation-wide clientele.
