For Immediate Release-September 27, 2011

Lloyd Library and Museum (LLM) is pleased to announce:

The Making of a Botanist: Joseph Dalton Hooker, 1817-1911

October 8 through December 30, 2011

Opening reception and lecture-Saturday, October 8, 4-7 p.m.

This is the centenary celebration year of the death of
Joseph Dalton Hooker, famed 19th century botanist and explorer of India
and the Himalayas, son of William Jackson Hooker, friend and confidant
of Charles Darwin, and Director of Kew Gardens in London. His
contributions to botany are immense, especially in the area of
rhododendron and orchid research, but in many other areas as well. On
display will be a select sampling of the many resources held at LLM by
Joseph Dalton Hooker and his father. In addition, the exhibit will
demonstrate Hooker's connections with other well-known 19th century
naturalists, such as Darwin, Thomas Huxley, Alfred Russel Wallace, and
Charles Lyell, all of whom he considered friends as well as colleagues.
Together these resources reveal how and why Hooker became the great
botanist that he was. Highlights of the exhibit include the first
edition of Darwin's On the origin of species by means of natural
selection (1859), Victoria regia, or the Great Water-Lily of South
America by William Jackson Hooker (1847), and The rhododendrons of
Sikkim-Himalaya by Joseph Dalton Hooker (1849), of which the latter two
contain stunning, over-sized examples of botanical illustration.

At the opening reception on Saturday, October 8 at 4:30
p.m., Gene Kritsky, noted author and professor at the College of Mount
St. Joseph, will speak on the relationship between Charles Darwin and
Hooker. Complementing the book collection, the LLM art gallery will
display an eclectic exhibit by a variety of local and regional artists
on the subjects of the natural history of India, the Himalayas, and the
broader Asian region. From orchids to orangutans and botanical
illustration to sculptures to multi-media works, the art exhibit
promises to be a unique experience. It will also run from October 8
through December 30, 2011.

Another related program will be offered at LLM on
Wednesday evening, November 30, 2011, 7-9 p.m.-SAVE the DATE! Michael
A. Flannery, Associate Director of Historic Collections, University of
Alabama, Birmingham, and former Director of LLM, will discuss his new
book Alfred Russel Wallace: A Rediscovered Life. Following the
presentation, there will be a dessert and coffee reception. Together
these autumn activities at LLM will provide a rather in-depth view of
some of England's greatest 19th century naturalists.

The Lloyd Library and Museum, located at 917 Plum Street, downtown
Cincinnati, is a local and regional cultural treasure. The library was
developed in the nineteenth century by the Lloyd brothers-John Uri,
Curtis Gates, and Nelson Ashley to provide reference sources for Lloyd
Brothers Pharmacists, Inc., one of the leading pharmaceutical companies
of the period. Today the library is recognized worldwide by the
scientific community as a vital research center. The library holds,
acquires, and provides access to both historic and current materials on
the subjects of pharmacy, botany, horticulture, herbal and alternative
medicine, pharmacognosy, and related topics. Although our collections
have a scientific focus, they also have relevance to humanities topics,
such as visual arts and foreign languages through resources that feature
botanical and natural history illustrations, original artworks, and
travel literature, thereby revealing the convergence of science and art.
The Lloyd is open to anyone with an interest in these topics. Free
parking is available for patrons and visitors behind the library
building. For more information, visit the Lloyd website at
