*Free Seminar: Preservation, Storage, and Management of Moving Image
Collections*

The Center for the History of Psychology is pleased to announce a one-day
seminar on preservation and management of film-based collections.
Jean-Louis Bigourdan of the Image Permanence Institute will lead this
seminar to help students, faculty, and collecting institutions:

   - Identify film materials
   - Assess the vulnerability of film materials
   - Understand best practices in film preservation
   - Conduct collection evaluations using acid detection strips
   - Evaluate their collection needs through environmental monitoring
   - Understand how to control macroclimates and microclimates in film
   collections
   - Identify different options for implementing cold storage
   - Define the best storage strategy for their collection
   - Understand how to implement and monitor different storage strategies

*About the Workshop Leader*

*Jean-Louis Bigourdan* is a research scientist at the Image Permanence
Institute in Rochester, New York. He received his diploma in art
conservation from the Institut Français du Restauration des Oeuvres d'Art
in Paris. He is an international expert on film preservation and practical
strategies for managing film collections. He has studied the effect of
microenvironments on the stability of cellulose acetate photographic film,
the effect of cycling environmental conditions on library and archives
materials, and the preservation of magnetic tape collections. He conducts
collection surveys and consults on the implementation of cold storage.
Currently, he is involved in an NEH-funded education and training project
leading to the development of *filmcare.org*, a web-based application for
the preservation of film materials.*
