Two films showcasing "old film" at the Athens Film Festival this year. (Here's your excuse to come to Athens!)

THE GREAT FLOOD
Director: Bill Morrison
U.S.A. Not rated, 80 min.

The Mississippi River Flood of 1927 was the most destructive river flood in American history. For the film, Morrison scoured film archives, including the Fox Movietone Newsfilm Library and the National archives, for footage of the Mississippi River Flood. All film documenting this catastrophe was shot on volatile nitrate stock, and what footage remains is pock marked and partially deteriorated. The degraded filmstock figures prominently in Morrison's aesthetic with distorted images suggesting different planes of reality in the story-those lived, dreamt, or remembered. http://athensfilmfest.org/the-great-flood/

Show Times:
Sunday, April 13, 7:15 PM;
Tuesday, April 15, 5:15 PM;
Thursday, April 17, 7:15 PM
Location: The Athena Cinema, 20 S Court St, Athens, OH 45701, (740) 592-5106

DEEP EARTH
With composer Matthew Burtner, and the NOBROW.collective

"Deep Earth" also incorporates "mined" film images, culled from a large collection of old educational films collected by the Athens Center for Film and Video. The performance is multi-media and interdisciplinary, immersed in video and music--both of which are heavily intertwined with sophisticated and cutting edge computer technologies. http://athensfilmfest.org/deep-earth/

Show Time: Thursday, April 17, 8:00 pm
Location: Central Venue, 29 E Carpenter St., Athens

About the Festival: The Athens International Film and Video Festival was founded in 1974, and since then has presented independent films from around the world. The Festival is sponsored by the Athens Center for Film and Video, a project of the College of Fine Arts at Ohio University. This year's festival will take place April 11-17, 2014. http://athensfilmfest.org/
