The Hiram College Archives has an immediate opening for a graduate intern to assist in the production of metadata as part of a grant-funded project to digitize the James A. Garfield Collection.  Only graduate students currently enrolled in a program will be considered.  Please see description below.

Hiram College Archives Graduate Internship

Digitizing the James A. Garfield Collection







Overview:

The intern will assist in a grant-funded project to create metadata for digitized manuscript and photographic materials in the College's James A. Garfield Collection. The intern will learn about the archives' digital program; learn to create metadata using ContentDM and Library of Congress subject headings; learn to scan on an Epson Expression 11000XL flatbed photo scanner; learn to create derivative images using Adobe Photoshop; learn to create searchable PDFs using Abbyy FineReader; and work closely with the archivist to compile accurate logs and statistics and ensure consistency in file naming and metadata standards.



This is a part-time position, $10/hour, lasting 8-10 weeks or 272 total hours.



Essential function and percentage of time:

*         Creating metadata for scanned images:  90%

o   Use of ContentDM software

o   Adhering to standards set by Hiram College Archives and Cleveland State University's Cleveland Memory Project

o   Use and verification of Library of Congress Subject Headings

*         Scanning and manipulating images of documents and photographs 6%

o   Use of Epson Expression 11000XL flatbed photo scanner

o   Use of Adobe Photoshop and Abbyy FineReader to manipulate images

o   Practice good archival materials handling practices

*         Maintaining Excel spreadsheet information 2%

*         Creating accurate transcriptions of handwritten documents when requested 2%



Requirements:

*         Currently enrolled in a graduate history, public history or museum studies, or library sciences program with archival couse work completed

*         Good working knowledge of 19th century U.S. history

*         Ability to work independently

*         An understanding of the importance of historical preservation



Preferred requirements:

*         Familiarity with ContentDM software

*         Working knowledge of appropriate software, such as Adobe Photoshop, Abbyy FineReader, and MS Office products

*         Familiarity with Ohio history, especially the Western Reserve region

*         Ability to transcribe 19th century handwriting
