Call for Proposals: ArchivesFest in the City of Festivals!

The Midwest Archives Conference will hold its Annual Meeting April 28-30, 2016, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin! MAC “kicks off” the traditional Milwaukee festival season with a focus on all things archives.

Session Proposals

The deadline for submitting proposals for the 2016 MAC Annual Meeting is September 25, 2015

The 2016 MAC Program Committee invites session proposal submissions that celebrate archives, archivists, and positive responses to the challenges of our profession. We envision a synthesis of archival celebration and education, and invite sessions that:

  *    Honor the diversity of the historical record and those who care for it;
  *    Invite us to try out different professional experiences;
  *    Applaud creative solutions and “thinking outside the box”;
  * Inspire us to share the joy of our collections and our work with researchers and stakeholders.

 You may submit your proposal at any time. The hard deadline for all proposals is 5 PM on Friday, September 25, 2015. Note that this date has changed from the date in the July MAC Newsletter.

 Students and new professionals wanting to submit a poster proposal will see a separate Call for Proposals in October.

 Session Content and Format

The Program Committee encourages lively discussion and interaction between attendees and presenters! Both traditional session formats and alternative session formats are welcome! Traditional session formats include a moderator and two to four presenters, with a time frame not exceeding 90 minutes.

Alternative session formats include, but are not limited to:

· Lightning rounds<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning_talk>, Pecha Kucha<http://www.pechakucha.org/faq>, or other shorter formats that engage the audience with professional trends, techniques, or projects. Time frame generally not exceeding 60 minutes.

· Debates<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debate>—where presenters discuss alternate viewpoints on a topic. Time frame 60-90 minutes, depending on the number of presenters and viewpoints represented.

· Open mics—where one or more presenters facilitates a discussion between audience members, who offer strategies and perspectives on a topic. Time frame generally not exceeding 60 minutes.

· World café<http://www.theworldcafe.com/method.html>—where meeting stations with discussion topics are positioned around the room, and participants can rotate through the discussions. Time frame 60-90 minutes, depending on the number of discussion topics/stations.

 Speaker Representation

The Program Committee values the input of multiple perspectives to create a diverse slate of presentations. We encourage submissions from all interested presenters, including students, new professionals, first-time presenters, and those from traditionally underrepresented groups, as well as individuals from related professions, on a variety of topics.

To facilitate collaboration among archivists for session ideas, the Program Committee encourages the use of the MAC Facebook page<https://www.facebook.com/groups/9031391258/> and the MAC Google Collaboration Spreadsheet available at http://bit.ly/MAC16Collab<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1jzpDWFvD5O3Uxp2Z9ukUUJyeCA-RKPtAMts1NtqKO3o/edit?pli=1#gid=0> (Google account is not necessary to view or edit the document).

 Proposal Evaluation

The Program Committee will evaluate all proposals submitted by the deadline. Proposals will be evaluated using the following criteria:

  *    Merit and clarity of the 250-word abstract;
  * Completeness of the proposal, particularly having well-developed content and sufficient speakers to address all relevant aspects of the topic; and
  * Diversity of the content and speaker representation, with weight also given to format.

All proposals will be considered in the context of the overall structure of the meeting and availability of time slots for proposed sessions.

Individuals with proposals chosen for inclusion in the MAC 2016 Annual Meeting will be notified in late October 2015. All individuals in a chosen proposal must sign a presenter agreement.
