History-Related Provisions in the Every Student Succeeds Act with New Dedicated Funding Streams for History and Civics
Congress recently took a major step forward to replace the controversial "No Child Left Behind Act" that was passed in 2001.On December 2, the House by a vote of 359-64 approved the conference report to a bill (S.1177) to reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). For the historical community, the conference report restores targeted federal funding for K-12 history and civics education. Department of State Announces the Release of Newly Digitized Versions of 18 Volumes from the 'Foreign Relations of the United States' Series, the Official Documentary Record of the U.S. Foreign Relations
These volumes cover events that took place between 1945 and 1974. The release is part of the Office of The Historian's ongoing project, in partnership with the University of Wisconsin Digital Collection Center, to digitize the entire Foreign Relations series. These volumes are available online and as free ebooks at the office of the historian's website. Cliff Kuhn, Oral History Association Executive Director, Passes Away at 63
The National Coalition for History is incredibly saddened by the passing of the Oral History Association Executive Director Cliff Kuhn earlier in November. Kuhn was instrumental in the oral history movement, and his work has inspired many. National Archives Awards $1.8 Million in
Grants for Historical Records for Projects
Archivist of the United States David S. Ferriero has awarded 32 grants to projects being undertaken in 26 states and the District of Columbia. The grants program is carried out through the National Historical Publications and Records Commission.

Librarian of Congress Now Term Limited
For the first time, the President has established a set term of office for the Librarian of Congress. While previously the Librarian served for life, future Librarians will have a 10 year term of office renewable for the same length of time upon reconfirmation by the Senate.

National Park Service Awards over $500,000 to Protect over
180 Acres at 3 Civil War Battlefields
The grant projects are at Perryville, Kentucky; Corinth, Mississippi; and Brandy Station, Virginia. The grants are funded by the Land and Water Conservation Fund.
