and Engagement with Historical Records Grant Announced * The National
Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) recently announced a
grant program to encourage public access to historical records titled,
“Literacy and Engagement with Historical Records.” The new grant aims to
generate online tools to better engage digitized records and provide
training for digital literary skills needed to access those records. Read

*NEH Community College Grants Announced*

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) recently launched a new
series of grants for two-year college institutions. Under the umbrella
“Humanities Initiatives,” these NEH Community College grants are “intended
to strengthen the teaching and study of the humanities in subjects such as
history, philosophy, and literature” and “enhance existing humanities
programs, resources, or courses, or to develop new ones.” Read more...

*NEH "Dialogues on the Experience of War" Grant Program Announced*

A new grant program aimed at bringing a “humanities perspective and context
to the experience of war” is being offered by the National Endowment for
the Humanities (NEH). The “Dialogues on the Experience of War” grant
program plans to “expand and deepen the understanding of military service
[through] humanities text and community discussions.” It falls under NEH’s
Stand Together initiative, which is the institution’s commitment to
engagement with military veterans and their communities through the

*Former Archivist of the United States, Weinstein, Passes*

Former Archivist of the United States Allen Weinstein passed away on June
18, 2015. Dr. Weinstein was sworn into office in February 2005 and retired
in December 2008 due to ill health. Highlights of his tenure include the
establishment of the National Declassification Initiative and the addition
of the Richard M. Nixon library in the National Archives system of
Presidential libraries. Dr. Weinstein’s public outreach efforts resulted in
the establishment of the Boeing Learning Center and Digital Vaults. Read

*Librarian of Congress to Retire*

James H. Billington, the 13th Librarian of Congress, will retire on January
1, 2016. The former history professor and Rhodes Scholar was appointed by
President Ronald Reagan in 1987 to oversee the largest library in the
world. Billington is credited with expanding the Library’s public outreach,
including a lead role in the creation of Thomas.gov legislative search
engine and the National Book Festival. His 28-year legacy is not without
its critics, however, many of which blame Billington for the institution’s

*The Smithsonian Welcomes New Secretary *

Dr. David J. Skorton became the Smithsonian Institutions 13th Secretary in
its 169-year history on July 1, 2015. Previously, Skorton served as
president at Cornell University and Iowa University. His background and
training is in cardiology, which he taught for twenty-six years. He is the
first medical doctor to lead the Smithsonian. Read more...
