LLOYD LIBRARY AND MUSEUM ANNOUNCES A NEW EXHIBITION

"Medicine Illuminated" 

Art and Rare Books exhibition | Exhibition Dates: May 11-July 31, 2015

 

Cincinnati, OH - May 27, 2015: Medicine Illuminated, the latest
exhibition at the Lloyd Library and Museum, provides a rare look into a
hidden part of the collections at the Lloyd - medical history and how
medicine has been illustrated.  Published rare texts on display date
from 1546 and cover the likes of Hippocrates and Galen, and take you
through a four century ride of medical developments and improvements.
The art comes from the Lloyd's Vesalius Trust Collection of Art in the
Service of Science, which features works from notable 20th and 21st
century illustrators.

 

The exhibition demonstrates the need for medical illustrators and the
value of their work.  Illustration, especially scientific illustration,
teaches and illuminates for the reader in ways that words cannot always
adequately describe.  And, so if one picture is worth a thousand words,
this exhibition speaks volumes.  Many of the artworks on display feature
what were, at the time of their creation, innovative techniques, new
knowledge, and new methods of action, for physicians, students, and
patients.  And, while the subject matter might not appeal to everyone, a
step back from the subject and a step forward into the beauty of the art
itself is something everyone can appreciate.

 

Martin Finch (his work on Heart Surgery at left) was the first medical
illustrator to donate his life's work to the Vesalius Trust Collection.
