Librarian/Archivist in the Marian Library


The University of Dayton seeks an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented professional to join the Marian Library.


Position summary:

This is a tenure-track Assistant Professor position reporting to the Director of the Marian Library, with an anticipated start date of September 1, 2016. The Librarian/Archivist of the Marian Library will be responsible for contributing to all departmental activities, including processing of collections, reference and outreach, curating exhibits, and formulating/documenting departmental policies and strategies. The Librarian/Archivist will play an integral role in the development, arrangement and description of the Marian Library's collections of papers, photographs, artworks, three-dimensional objects, and (moving forward) appropriate websites and computer files. She or he will support students and visitors by providing research assistance and teaching classes on the use of the Marian Library collections. A significant amount of archival work involves accessioning and processing of collections and consideration of best practices for access and preservation, to ensure that collections can be used now and in the future. The Librarian/Archivist will also coordinate the digitization of archival collection materials for preservation and access. In addition, this position will play an important role in outreach efforts to the UD community, by making creative connections between the collections and the needs of students and faculty. This position serves on library and university-wide committees.

Responsibilities also include scholarship and service required for tenure-track faculty.

Salary: $48,000



Required qualifications:

M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited program with concentration in archival theory and practice, or foreign equivalent

Experience in an academic or museum-related archive or library

Excellent written communication skills

Demonstrated experience or coursework using metadata standards such as DACS, EAD, AAT, Dublin Core, or similar

Demonstrated experience or coursework with basic preservation and conservation standards for special collections

Evidence of ability to provide instruction using special collections and research library materials

Evidence of ability to meet the University Libraries' promotion and tenure standards in librarianship, scholarship, and service



Marian Library Profile:

The Marian Library is a key component of the University Libraries at the University of Dayton. The Marian Library was founded by the Marianists in 1943 to develop, maintain, preserve and provide access to materials that support Marian scholarship and sound Marian devotion. To this end, it shares a mission with its sister unit, the International Marian Research Institute (IMRI). The Marian Library houses the world's largest collection of published materials on the Virgin Mary. The multi-language collection includes over 100,000 books and pamphlets. These works are supplemented by a Marian stamp collection, crèche collection, statues, medals, postcards and works of fine art. Publications include Marian Library Studies (original research on Marian topics), the twice-yearly Marian Library Newsletter, and Marian Studies (papers given at the annual meeting of the Mariological Society of America, which is headquartered at the Marian Library). The Marian Library is recognized both nationally and internationally as a center for study on the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Marian Library serves the research needs of faculty and students of the International Marian Research Institute (IMRI) and the University of Dayton, and researchers throughout the world. It also documents the diverse expressions of popular devotion to Mary, and provides public outreach through its exhibits, tours and reference services.
