Oral histories, performances, speeches, and other events that were once recorded on analog tape are now captured digitally. Libraries, archives, and museums collect these materials to ensure they are available for the future, but additional skills and tools are required to effectively manage and preserve these collections. Institutions are also digitizing analog audio collections, and then need to manage those digital materials. Participants in this class will learn basics of describing and organizing digital audio, including best practices for metadata, to ensure first that materials can be found in the future. Best practices for long-term storage, such as choosing appropriate file formats and physical storage media, will be discussed. Free, simple tools to perform basic preservation and management functions will also be demonstrated, so participants can easily build up digital preservation efforts around digital audio collections.
