Interior Backs Off Proposed National Parks Fee Increase

Officials at the Department of the Interior appear to be backing away from a proposed fee increase at national parks that received intense public backlash. NCH submitted comments<https://historycoalition.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08692bfb14b4b62cef6bb2878&id=a1ad6c8155&e=994dc209a0> opposing the dramatic hike in peak-season entrance fees at 17 popular national parks, as did over 100,000 Americans. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke has indicated that his department is investigating other options to deal with the cost of the parks' maintenance backlog, according to the Washington Post<https://historycoalition.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08692bfb14b4b62cef6bb2878&id=bc6198d9e3&e=994dc209a0>.

Congress Mandates Publication of CRS Reports

All non-confidential Congressional Research Service (CRS) reports must now be made publicly available online within 90 to 270 days, thanks to a provision in the omnibus funding bill passed in March. The move comes after decades of advocacy to convince Congress to release the reports to the public, although many were already shared online through non-governmental websites. Smithsonian Secretary Opposes Women's History Museum

Secretary of the Smithsonian David J. Skorton recently launched a Women's History Initiative to highlight women's stories throughout the Smithsonian system, but he does not support the movement to create a standalone women's history museum. A congressional commission in 2016 recommended the creation of such a museum over the next decade, but Skorton argued that the Smithsonian does not have the resources to support another building. NCH supports the creation of the museum<https://historycoalition.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08692bfb14b4b62cef6bb2878&id=4a78ac462d&e=994dc209a0> and has advocated in the past for the inclusion of historians in its development. For full details about Skorton's comments, see the Washington Post's recent article.<https://historycoalition.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=08692bfb14b4b62cef6bb2878&id=2887cc5f9f&e=994dc209a0>
