Subject: FW: Open Your Doors to Ohio Open Doors

[cid:image002.jpg at 01D66F22.0C3CF120]Ohio Open Doors is scheduled from Sept. 11 - 21, 2020. It's a program that you and your partners can use to showcase your communities' special historic places and landmark buildings. You and others may have already received emails about OOD on 7/21 and 8/6. Since I've become involved with Ohio Open Door, I want to do all I can to let Ohio's history community know about it, too

This has been a strange, topsy-turvy year that has disrupted, for all of us, many plans and aspirations. However, with change comes opportunities for a brighter tomorrow. With that spirit, we're reshaping this year's Ohio Open Doors to be a virtual showcase. We invite you to create an event about your place that you can share remotely.

Special Focus on Historic Theaters and Opera Houses
In addition to hosting virtual content from the full range of historic places and special landmarks, this year, we'd like to especially highlight Ohio's unparalleled collection of historic theatres and opera houses. This will be a powerful anchor for the whole Ohio Open Doors website and give a much-needed boost to historic performance venues that are struggling this summer. If you're not sure how to approach this year's event, why not focus on the theater or opera house in your town?
Other Historic Places and Collections Welcome to Participate
While the focus this year is historic theaters and opera houses, you don't have to be one to virtually host a great Ohio Open Doors event. Archives can participate by sharing behind-the-scenes video tours of notable holdings and digital collections, museums can feature cool objects not currently on exhibit and hosts with archaeological collections can showcase aspects of the 15,000 year+ story of human habitation of what we now call Ohio.

Organizing driving tours of Ohio Historical Markers in your county or community are also great ideas for Ohio Open Doors events. Participants can enjoy most markers from the comfort and socially-distant safety of their cars. They can read the texts of markers using their smart phone to access the marker's website: remarkableohio.org<https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.remarkableohio.org%2F&data=02%7C01%7Ccarleton%40ohio.edu%7C4d0f40ad21cf4108678e08d83d5ac30d%7Cf3308007477c4a70888934611817c55a%7C0%7C0%7C637326807319118244&sdata=f77Bx7ZKGgpaJi42ou4aMy4zuokw4I%2FBXAFU5s9X%2Bpk%3D&reserved=0>. All you would need to do is provide a map and a list of markers. Of course, you can also organize driving tours of other historic sites, too.

How to participate and make the most out of this year's Ohio Open Doors
There are a variety of ways to participate and celebrate your historic place this year and as in the past, we're here to help. Ways to participate include submitting:

  * Photos, videos and stories of your location
  *   Guest blog posts
  *   Cell phone video tours
  * Live virtual talks and/or sharing pre-existing content

Safety Note about Outdoor, In-Person Events
Ohio Open Doors will also accept other in-person events that are outdoor and self-guided or outdoor with staff/volunteer involvement. All in-person events must follow county public health guidelines and by hosting an in-person outdoor event, your organization agrees to follow them. With cases of COVID-19 increasing in the state, the State of Ohio issued a new public health advisory system<https://nam03.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fohiohistory.us14.list-manage.com%2Ftrack%2Fclick%3Fu%3D37ce5c8c24208a588c681edc5%26id%3D46a5c3f414%26e%3De2a6392e2c&data=02%7C01%7Ccarleton%40ohio.edu%7C4d0f40ad21cf4108678e08d83d5ac30d%7Cf3308007477c4a70888934611817c55a%7C0%7C0%7C637326807319128238&sdata=rWZaLAxgwlKDoCDcoMNAqKnxqJuuPYKzcS4uj7u0J3A%3D&reserved=0> to communicate the severity of the virus' spread. The health advisory system includes four colors which indicate the risk level for each county. The Ohio History Connection is using this new data system to guide our decisions. You will determine whether to host your in-person, outdoor event during Level 3. If a county reaches Level 4, the Ohio History Connection may require the event's cancellation..

Virtual options can "whet the appetite" of people who, unable to visit in person, are curious and excited to explore Ohio's vast and varied heritage. We think that many who see your submission for the website this year will want to visit your site and experience it for real once it's safe to do so post-pandemic.
What's Next?
We're reworking the toolkit to include helpful tips on creating cellphone videos and blog content, submitting photos and stories and creating or repurposing virtual events.
