The Membership & Professional Development Section of RBMS is pleased to present an 8-part virtual Jobs & Hiring Workshop Series. Workshops will take place on Wednesdays, from February 17th through April 7th, 2021, at 3pm ET/2pm CT/12pm PT.

The series is co-sponsored by the RBMS Membership & Professional Development Committee and the Workshops Committee, but is open to all rare books, antiquarian, special collections, libraries, museums, galleries and archives professionals, students, volunteers, and interested parties.

The overarching goal for this series is to connect individuals in galleries, libraries, archives, museums, and special collections (GLAMS) with other/allied professionals who can share advice and experiences on different aspects of the job market and hiring practices in a variety of related jobs.

Session Descriptions:
Online & On the Market: Social Media & Personal Branding while Job Hunting - February 17th
This panel will address how job seekers balance the personal & professional in their social media accounts; and how hiring committees may consider applicants' social media presence (or not).
Panelists: Jesse Erickson (University of Delaware); Patrick Olson (Patrick Olson Rare Books); Erika Jenns (Southern Tier Library System); Alexandra Alvis (Type Punch Matrix).

Position Descriptions - February 24th
This panel will address how job seekers evaluate position descriptions against their needs and skillsets, and what to consider when deciding whether or not to apply to a particular position.
Panelists: Colleen Barrett (University of Kentucky); Kathryn Kuntz (Davenport Public Library); Amalia Castañeda (CSU-Dominguez Hills); Ashleigh Coren (National Portrait Gallery)

Interview Questions - March 3rd
This panel will address how job seekers might prepare for interview questions specific to a variety of GLAMS jobs & adjacent careers.
Panelists: Anna Chen (Clark Library, UCLA); Niamh Stroud (Jarndyce Antiquarian Booksellers); Mattie Taormina (Sutro Library); Erika N. Witt (LSU/Southern University of New Orleans)

Q&A with Hiring Managers - March 10th
This panel will allow several people with hiring experience in GLAMS institutions to discuss how hiring happens, and take questions on the hiring process.
Panelists: Blynne Olivieri (University of West Georgia); Tamar Evangelestia-Dougherty (Cornell University); M. Elizabeth Davidson (McDaniel College) [further panelists TBA]

Hiring for Managers - March 17th
This panel will address managers in the hiring process, and discuss how hiring happens from a management perspective. How can we do better? What needs to change?
Panelists: E. Haven Hawley (University of Florida); Laura Micham (Duke University); Sofía Becerra-Licha (Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts); Petrina Jackson (Syracuse University)

Resumes & Cover Letters - March 24th
This panel will discuss the process of crafting cover letters and resumes for GLAMS and related jobs; considerations, advice, and issues.

Mid-Career Changes - March 31st
This panel will allow panelists to discuss changing careers, either within GLAMS and related jobs, or to other types of fields and professions.
Panelists: Erin Blake (Folger Shakespeare Library); Shanee' Yvette Murrain (DPLA); Amy Hildreth Chen (Medical Editor & Independent Scholar); Colleen Theisen (University of Iowa); Tad Boehmer (Michigan State University)

[Under/Over]qualified: The Question of More Degrees - April 7th
This panel will begin to address to issues of more degrees in GLAMS and related careers. How should we think about whether or not to return to school, and the usefulness of multiple degrees in our jobs?
Panelists: Devin Fitzgerald (UCLA); John Overholt (Harvard); Alexandra Alvis (Type Punch Matrix); Sara Schliep (Folger Shakespeare Library), and Emily Spunaugle (Oakland University).
