[SOA] Honesty for Ohio Education Updates & Actions | Week of April 18, 2022

Good Morning SOA Members,
The Ohio Statehouse is on break until May 9th, so now is the time to
prepare testimony and catch up on what's been happening with HB 327, and
the new HB 616, the so called "Ohio Don't Say Gay" bill. Members have been
reaching out to me about how they can be more involved in fighting against
these harmful bills that threaten our work as archivists and memory
workers, and that threatens the people and children in our communities. SOA
issued a statement regarding HB327 in January, and we will be discussing
the continued threat to censor honest and inclusive education and more
during a membership forum at our annual meeting in May.
If you've not already done so, please sign up for Honesty for Ohio
Education to stay on top of the latest with regard to these bills and how
you, and we as an organization, can take action to ensure these bills don't
pass. You can read this week's latest update in the email below.

*House Bill 616*
Though the Ohio Statehouse in on break until the week of May 9th, Honesty
for Education and our partners are continuing the fight against HB 616.
HB 616 is Ohio's third educational gag order that censors honest education
and discussion about race, racism, sexual orientation, and gender identity.
Taking its cues from HB 322, HB 327, Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill, and
other copycat bills across the country, HB 616 prohibits the teaching of
sexual orientation and gender identity, Critical Race Theory, and the 1619
Project, among other "divisive and inherently racist concepts".

The Ohio School Safety Center (OSSC) is announcing the creation of the Ohio
Student Safety Advisory Council, which will include two representatives
from each of the five school safety regions (NW, NE, Central, SW, SE).
Representatives will submit application materials and short essays along
with a recommendation letter written by educators, school resource
officers, school counselors or administrators. The OSSC will evaluate
applications in partnership with the Governor’s Ohio School Safety Working
