Join SAA's Preservation Section on June 12th at 2pm ET for our next Coffee Chat: Progress, Not Perfection: Realistic Approaches to Environmental Monitoring and Collections Stewardship for Archives!
Feeling overwhelmed by preservation "best practices" that seem out of reach? Join Claire Winfield (Conserv) and Megan O'Hern-Crook & Brandon Werts (HAI) for a candid and engaging conversation about how archives can take practical, manageable steps toward better environmental monitoring and management-without needing a gold-standard budget or facility.
This informal coffee chat will focus on how institutions can identify high-impact starting points, make incremental improvements, and shift from reactive to proactive care of their spaces and collections. We'll also share real-world examples, field horror stories (and lessons learned!), and discuss how environmental data can support preservation planning and assessments. Bring your questions, your war stories, and your curiosity-half the session will be open Q&A.
Please use the zoom link below. The session will not be recorded.

Claire Winfield is a painting conservator and Head of Growth at Conserv, an environmental monitoring platform focused on the unique needs of collections. Prior to joining Conserv, Claire spearheaded light monitoring efforts at the Saint Louis Art Museum with a focus on a newly-built, daylit wing for special exhibition and permanent galleries. Her work included evaluating projections from lighting designers, establishing light monitoring protocols and the use of cumulative exposure models for recordkeeping and evaluation, incorporating cumulative models into the museum's CMS, and recommending building and protocol modifications to support preservation efforts. Claire has over 10 years of benchwork conservation experience from private practice, regional center, and museums including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Brandon Werts joined the team at HAI with excitement for hands-on archival processing. With a background in non-profit archives he has a vested interest in problem solving to find solutions that fit client needs, goals, and constraints. At HAI, Brandon has worked with non-profit organizations, institutions of higher education, law firms, churches, government officials, city government entities, libraries, and more. These projects have included assessment reports, processing and cataloging manuals, collections processing, collections management plans, governance documents, digitized collections, and digital exhibitions. Brandon's experience managing teams on such a wide variety of projects led to an interest in people management and building client relationships, which have become some of his key contributions as assistant director of HAI's Archives and Information Management Services division. Brandon holds a Master of Library and Information Science from San Jose State University, and degrees in Music and Digital Media Arts: Audio Recording from California State University Dominguez Hills.
