*OPLIN 4Cast #147:
The Reader Experience
*October 7, 2009

  /4casting technologies that could have an impact on public libraries./

The reading experience, just as with any online or face-to-face
experience, is about how the customer wants to be served. What's good
for you, may be the opposite of what I want to get from your store or
website.  Reading is no exception.

The idea of curling up with a book and a cup of hot coffee on a cold
winter night may be sound like fun to some people, but those who are
addicted to reading may not necessarily care what form the "book"
takes. Whether it's the printed word, on a Kindle or reading
interactively online, people will to continue to read, just in new ways.

    * Will Books Be Napsterized?
      <http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/04/business/04digi.html> Free
      books at your library (legal). Pirated books online also free
      (but not so legal).
    * Curling Up With Hybrid Books, Videos Included
      <http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/01/books/01book.html?_r=1&hp>"...the
      notion of the book is becoming increasingly elastic as publishers
      mash together text, video and Web features in a scramble to keep
      readers interested in an archaic form of entertainment."
    * Is This the Future of the Digital Book?
      <http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/05/business/05stream.html?_r=1&em>
      Discover a multimedia hybrid in the "Vook."
    * Infinite Book Looks More Like An Infinite Brochure, Still My
      Favorite Digital Media Reader Concept
      <http://gizmodo.com/5372456/infinite-book-looks-more-like-an-infinite-brochure-still-my-favorite-digital-media-reader-concept>
      Is this the "missing link" between the digital and analogues
      worlds? It's all digital, but you can still flip the pages.
