Dear Colleagues:
The Rural & Small Libraries Conference began as a project of the Center =
for
the Study of Rural Libraries at Clarion University of Pennsylvania after =
a
successful venture with an annual bookmobile conference in Columbus, OH.
Last year, the subject of creating an association with primarily a =
virtual
presence, was discussed. A steering committee made up of people =
involved in
previous years' conferences was put together to investigate the =
possibility.
With Bernard Vavrek, Director for the Study of Rural Librarianship and
professor at Clarion University coordinating activities, we have created =
the
Association of Rural and Small Libraries-see mission statement below.
We have "taken over" the conference and will have our first annual =
meeting
and nominations for officers at the conference on September 28-October =
1.
The conference is usually small. As indicated in a prior list letter, =
some
of that is due to lack of advertising. The Association bulk mails a
conference brochure to every library in the United States. I know in =
years
past, the one for my library never made it to me, even when I was a
speaker!!! We're not sure where the breakdown is but appreciate =
suggestions
on how we can better inform our potential audience.
Below, you will find our mission and the conference information-it's =
never
too late to register. Join us! We have a lot to offer and we know you =
do
too!
Mission=20
The mission of the Association of Rural and Small Libraries is to =
enhance
the development of libraries on a global scale.=20
The objectives of the Association of Rural and Small Libraries include:
* To organize a network of individuals concerned with the development =
of
rural and small libraries;=20
* To provide an opportunity for the continuing education of those =
involved;
* To provide an ability for individuals to exchange ideas and to meet =
on a
sustaining basis;=20
* To enable individuals to act together for mutual goals;=20
* To provide a source of current information for those involved;=20
* To collect and disseminate information that is critical to this =
network.=20
The Association of Rural and Small Libraries is supported by annual
membership dues of thirty dollars ($39).
