[OPLINLIST] name this book, sci-fi

Hi,
I've got a patron looking for a sci-fi book he read back in the early 80's.

The basic theme is that a teacher finds his future timelines book:
cause/effect, possibilities, options based on any number of decisions he
makes, that kind of thing.

We've both tried novelist and asked the resident sci-fi person to no avail.

Any help is appreciated.
