---Library staff serving young people and their families have long
celebrated their patrons' tremendous strength and capabilities as learners,
and have a tradition of actively seeking innovative and creative ways to
serve young people better. For forty years, the experiences of the children,
educators, families, and community of Reggio Emilia, Italy, have spoken to
the great power and potential in every child. These experiences have
stressed the ability of children to teach us to learn with joy, to tell a
story in many "languages," and to see the extraordinary in the ordinary.
Today, advocates for children from all over the world study the
well-documented work of Reggio Emilia through shared inquiry and reflection.
Join us as we come together to explore the relationship of the experiences
of Reggio to a library context, to gain a new understanding of "hands-on"
work with youth, and to renew joy in our daily lives.

ABOUT OUR PRESENTERS:

Linda Norton-Smith brings 20 years experience in early childhood education
to her presentations. She has been a teacher, center director, teacher
trainer, and college instructor. She recently returned from a study tour in
Reggio Emilia, Italy. She currently is Director of Operations for Kids Play,
Inc. and adjunct faculty at Kent State University. She is married to a
philosophy professor and has two teen-age children.

Barb White came to Ohio by way of New York, New Haven, and Chicago, and to
librarianship by way of ancient Near Eastern studies, magazine publishing,
and curriculum development. Barb is branch manager and children's services
librarian at the urban West Hill Branch of the Akron-Summit County Public
Library, and works closely with Head Start and the Association for the
Education of Young Children on literacy initiatives. Barb first encountered
the experiences of the schools of Reggio Emilia through her work with the
early childhood community, and has since participated in a study tour there
and co-facilitates (with Linda) the Akron Reggio Study Group. Barb is
married to a mathematician and has three children.
