Folks:
I notice this morning there are two more Virus Alert messages on OPLINList.
You probably are all aware that the current generation of viruses "spoofs"
the sender line on infected messages. OPLIN works in two ways on
controlling the spread of viruses. At the broad wide area network level we
watch for spikes of activity from particular libraries, alert them when we
think they are infected and work with them to fix the situation. At the
server level we strip viruses from infected messages and send the receiver
notification that we have stopped a message with a virus attached. It is
that procedure that results in these messages to the list.

We apologize to those of you who find them a nuisance. We are exploring
ways to keep them off the listservs but have come up with one that meets all
our needs. Please know that when you see them they are at least a
reassuring sign that a virus infestation is being prevented from spreading.
