Subject: Maintenance Window and Update on Performance Issues


As you may be aware, over the past three weeks, SIRS customers have been
experiencing intermittent slowness or access turnaways. These issues are
occurring now due to the increased user load in a new environment, and
require software development changes and hardware changes. 
As such, our technical teams have planned the following hardware and
software upgrades to address the situation: 
*	ProQuest has scheduled a maintenance window beginning at 10pm
EDT Friday October 8, 2004 - 10am EDT Saturday October 9, 2004. The
following products will not be available during this time:

SIRS Platform: 

*	SIRS Knowledge Source (sks.sirs.com
<https://owa.il.proquest.com/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://sks.sirs.c
om/> )-- Including SIRS Researcher, SIRS Government Reporter, SIRS
Renaissance, SKS WebSelect and SIRS Interactive Citizenship Series. 

*	SIRS Discoverer (discoverer.sirs.com
<https://owa.il.proquest.com/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://discoverer
.sirs.com/> )-- Including SIRS Discoverer and Discoverer WebFind. 
A software release will be rolled out on October 13th, which will
include the following changes: 
*	Increased search engine performance resulting in shorter
response times. 

*	Database optimization to increase download speed. 

*	Lexile scores and sorting options added to the main search
results lists. 

*	New system monitors put into place to prevent access turnaways. 
Additionally, changes will be made to our Usage Reporting as follows: 
*	Reports requested from the following URL are being generated
over night on regular business days.

*	Logging of interface graphics as an 'access' was disabled as of
September 26th. This change will ensure that only page 'hits' and
reference materials are logged as an access. 

*	Some reports previously missing Session totals, will now include
this figure.
