Patricia Van Skaik, Manager, History and Genealogy Department of the 
Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.
Patricia holds both a Master of Science in Library Science and Master of 
History degree. She is a regular contributor to Ohio Genealogical 
Society Hamilton County Chapter publications and is author of several 
articles and books. Patricia is also a lecturer at the national and 
state levels, specializing in census, immigration, Civil War and German 
genealogy.

Denis Daly, Reference Librarian, History and Genealogy Department of the 
Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County.
Denis holds an MA in African American history.

The Genealogy Reference Interview

The genealogy librarian faces unique challenges when conducting the 
reference interview, the cornerstone of library service. The fundamental 
steps of the reference interview are presented as they apply to 
genealogical service along with many twists and turns encountered when 
assisting family historians.

Black Roots in Cyberspace: African American Genealogy on the Internet.
Presenter: Denis Daly
Utilizing the Internet for Genealogical research has become extremely 
popular over the past decade. However, without basic knowledge, this 
search can become frustrating. The speaker will address some of the 
basic challenges inherent in both Internet research and African-American 
genealogical research to help form a base from which electronic research 
can begin.

The presentation will cover:
1. A brief discussion of the unique nature of African American 
genealogy, it's specific difficulties and rewards which form the 
backbone of research in both print and electronic research.

2. General internet resources and their application to African-American 
genealogy.
- Using Ancestry and Heritage Quest
- Census records
- Military records
- Vital statistics
- General searches/List Serves

3. Specific resources
- Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County Home Page
- Using search engines for specific searches, county records, genealogy 
groups, and even family researchers doing work on your family through 
the maze of the Internet.
