KENT STATE SCHOOL OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE
ANNOUNCES SIXTEEN IMLS SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

The School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at Kent State Univer=
sity received a =24392=2C245 grant from the Institute for Museum and Libr=
ary Services (IMLS) as part of its =93Recruiting and Educating Librarians=
 for the 21st Century=94 program=2E  Dr=2E Greg Byerly (gbyerly=40kent=2E=
edu) and Dr=2E Carolyn S=2E Brodie (cbrodie=40kent=2Eedu) were recipients=
 of the grant award=2E =


The grant=2C =93New Librarians=2C New Leaders=3A Educating the Next Gener=
ation of School Library Media Specialists and Young Adult Librarians=2C=94=
 provides full tuition for all courses required for a Masters in Library =
and Information Science (MLIS) degree over a two-year period=2E   The Sch=
ool received 127 applications in Spring 2004 for the sixteen scholarships=
=2E  Eight scholarships were awarded to students specializing in young ad=
ult librarianship and eight were awarded to students who will become lice=
nsed as school library media specialists=2E  In addition=2C the sixteen s=
cholarship students will join state and national professional organizatio=
ns and attend conferences of these associations=2E   Students began class=
es this fall and will complete their degrees in 2006=2E

One unique aspect of this project is the creation of a cohort of youth se=
rvices librarians who will be trained to work with their counterpart=2C w=
hether in the school or public library=2E Another unique aspect of this p=
roject is the development of these individuals as leaders in librarianshi=
p and collaboration=2E  Scholarship students are able to participate in t=
his program through the School=92s 12-12-12 Distance Degree program and w=
ill be taking classes in Elyria=2C Franklin=2C Mansfield=2C as well as in=
 Kent and Columbus=2E
