BlankHello all,
My Board is trying to come up with a policy to deal with patrons who do
not return library materials. At what point or dollar value do you go
beyond just suspending borrowing privileges. What additional steps do you
take?
The Board does not want to use an collection agency. At one time we
used to "make house calls" and go to a person's home, knock on the door and
ask them to give us back the library books they have not returned. I am
concerned about the legal repercussions of doing that, not to mention the
safety of those sent out to collect materials.
Does anyone have a policy that they take borrowers to small claims
court? Can the Board file theft charges against a borrower who has not
returned books? What about patrons who use aliases to obtain multiple
library cards from different libraries?
I know this in an old, old subject without any perfect answers but I
would appreciate hearing what other libraries are doing that has worked in
any way to reduce the problem.

Linda Hren, Director
Newcomerstown Public Library
