Rita Soltan is an experienced children's librarian having worked in 
public libraries in both New York and Michigan for more than 30 years. 
Rita holds a B.A. in Education/Spanish Literature and an M.L.S. from 
Queens College of the City University of New York.

Rita has conducted numerous workshops for librarians, teachers and 
parents using literature throughout the curriculum. She has organized
and led many different book discussions for groups including 
Mother/Daughter and Father/Son book clubs as well as groups for children 
and family reading. She has been involved in planning and
implementing numerous staff development programs including literature 
conferences that incorporate provocative book discussion and was 
responsible for initiating the annual "Literature and the Child" 
conference held in southeast Michigan from 1995-2004. Rita is the author 
of the
forthcoming book "Reading Raps: A Book Club Guide for Librarians, Kids 
and Families" (Libraries Unlimited).

Active in the American Library Association, Rita is Past Chair of the 
Education Committee for ALSC and is Past Chair of the Children's 
Services Division of the Michigan Library Association. She has written 
the articles, Precocious Readers, and The Tween Market for the MLA 
Forum, an electronic journal for MLA and reviews regularly for Kirkus 
Reviews and School Library Journal.

Rita is currently working on a Master of Arts in Teaching Reading and 
Language Arts.


      Description

Part 1:
Cultivating the well-balanced children's collection

How to evaluate, organize, acquire and eliminate resources for youth 
amidst the wealth of quality children's literature.

Part 2:
Reaping the harvest: Children's Reference and Reader's Advisory
How to focus on the youth market, decipher requests, and work with 
existing collections and resources to provide effective reference and 
readers' advisory to kids, families, and educators.


      Meal

Continental Breakfast and a Luncheon Sandwich Tray will be provided.
