Program Description:
Can one actually create fun library programs using nonfiction books? And
how does one evaluate nonfiction books to know they are accurate and
definitely more fact than fiction? Sibert Award Winner James Cross
Giblin (Adolph Hitler; Secrets of the Sphinx; The Truth about Santa
Claus etc.) will come share his experiences with writing nonfiction and
sorting out fact from fiction in "A Writer's Perspective." Then Giblin,
also a children's book editor, will share the other side and represent
book publishers in "An Editor's Perspective." Co-author Michael Dahl of
Gotcha Covered!: More Nonfiction Book Talks To Get Kids Excited About
Reading will show how to use nonfiction to excite young readers, and
activities that could be used with the books in a library setting,
Charles Smith will share some of his poems which are hits for boys. On
the second day of the conference, we will "zero in" on one Dewey Decimal
number (the 700's) and explore how great artists and present day picture
book illustrators create their art. Mary Ann Kohl (Discovering Great
Artists: Hands-On Art for Children in the Styles of the Great Masters;
also Storybook Art: Hands-On Art for Children in the Styles of 100 Great
Picture Book Illustrators and many others) will present this day and
will even have hands-on art activities. Don't miss this one - YSS 16!=20
