OVAL Continuing Education Workshops

Introduction to the Dewey Decimal Classification

Wednesday, April 19, 2006 ~ 9:30 AM - 4:00 PM

Carol Bradsher, Experiential Learning

--It's a big world. We've organized it. As a general knowledge organization
tool, the Dewey Decimal Classification is a powerful resource for organizing
library collections. This workshop will teach participants how to use the
DDC by providing an overview of its structure and organization, and review
the principles for classifying. This session emphasizes hands-on learning,
and gives participants a chance to find out how much they've learned by
completing exercises. Please bring a set of the 22nd edition of the Dewey
Decimal Classification to the workshop. Sharing is encouraged if people make
arrangements before the session. In this workshop, participants will learn:

--the 7 principles on which the DDC is based;

--how to determine what a work is about;

--what's included in the Relative Index and how to read an index entry;

--how to read the schedule notation and identify invalid and optional
numbers, and read a Table of Preference;

--how to apply the classification principles and classify a multi-topical
work;

--how to build numbers using instructions in the schedules;

--how to build numbers using Tables 1&2.
